Pichwai is one of the most spectacular, ancient & traditional forms of art which originated in the villages of Nathdwara in the state of Rajasthan, India. This 400-year-old art form generally depicts and narrates the tales of Lord Krishna’s life. The Sanskrit word “Pichh” means back and “wais” means hanging, so Pichwais are paintings or hangings which form the backdrop behind the main deity of Krishna temples. The making of a traditional pichwai painting takes a considerable amount of time, ranging from a couple of weeks to months. Pichwai (pichvai) is a style of painting that originated over 400 years ago, in the town of Nathdwara near Udaipur in Rajasthan, India.
